Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe
Lateef is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and a member of the Body of Benchers, a body of Legal practitioners of the highest distinction in the legal profession in Nigeria. He is a past chairman of the Lagos Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association. He has been a member of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigerian Bar Association since 2019 till date.
He obtained a Bachelor’s degree (LLB) from the University of Wolverhampton, an LLM in International Commercial Law from the University of Westminster, and a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of South Wales. Lateef is the Managing Partner and head of the dispute resolution group in the Law Firm of Sofunde, Osakwe, Ogundipe & Belgore (SOOB Law). Over the years, he has garnered valuable experience, particularly in the areas of Commercial Litigation and Arbitration, Tax litigation, as well as Constitutional and Public Law. He is renowned for providing creative and innovative solutions to clients in areas where the law is considered to be novel and/or complex. Lateef has led a team of lawyers representing a number of foreign entities on tax matters in an area of law considered to be recondite in Nigeria.
He was a former Membership Officer for Africa of the IBA’s Committee on Taxation, a role in which he represented the interests of Africa in the committee, co-ordinated the activities of the taxation community, developed content for the Committee as far as Africa was concerned.
Lateef has been a strong advocate for the entrenchment and preservation of human rights, consistently working towards ensuring the protection of fundamental rights. He is passionate about combating gender-based violence and abuse. Lateef has handled numerous pro bono cases, dedicating his time and expertise to securing justice for the oppressed and vulnerable members of society.
He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK) Nigerian Branch and has served on the Executive Committee of the Institute at various times. He was also the chairman of the Young Members Group of the Institute between 2010 and 2014. He is a member of the Training Faculty and approved tutor in the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators UK (Nigeria Branch). He is also an Associate of the Business Recovery and Insolvency Practitioners Association of Nigeria (BRIPAN).
